A Day at Shetek: The End is Nigh… For the Summer.

“A Day At Shetek” is an ongoing series of blog posts about various daily goings-on here at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. This is the last week, and we are going out with a bang, here on the Shetek blog. Today’s post talks about registration and campers’ arrival.

It’s the beginning of the end! … For this summer. Camp staff have been greatly anticipating this week all summer, hoping that it would never come. But, sadly, it has. Campers are arriving for the last time this year.

Registration is a required part of campers’ stays. Here at Shetek, it also is a social time for the staff to meet their campers, and for the parents to say one last goodbye to their kids for the week. Sometimes there are smiles, others have tears. But overall, it’s always the start of something great.

Let’s see some pictures of this time.

A Day at Shetek: In Which Campers Get a New Activity

“A Day At Shetek” is an ongoing series of blog posts about various daily goings-on here at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Today we reveal a new game that’s been getting quite popular at camp: “Gagaball.”

A new game has surfaced in the camp’s basketball court, built from wood, put together with little bits of twisted metal (read: “screws”), and finished with care and dedication. This game is called “Gagaball.”

Gagaball is a variant of free-for-all dodgeball. Participants aim to get people “out” by hitting the ball at others, aiming for the legs (the knee or lower). There are other rules, which can be heard at camp from our expert Gagaball-playing counselors.

Here are a couple pictures of the kids having fun in Gagaball.

A Day at Shetek: Outcamp

“A Day At Shetek” is an ongoing series of blog posts about various daily goings-on here at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. This week we get intense as we go in tents for Outcamp.

Outcamp is probably one of the biggest deals in a typical week, for week-long campers. They canoe (or pontoon, if the weather isn’t good), and camp either under the stars or in tents, around a campfire. S’mores are a given, as is cooking over said fire.

Here are some pictures of the girls from this week going there in the pontoon.

A Day at Shetek: Athletics Camp Edition

Aside from typical weeks here at camp, there are also specialized weeks. This week happens to feature an athletics camp. Sports are practiced; fun is had.

Football, which is almost always a big deal here in Southwestern Minnesota, is one of the sports practiced here.

Another sport is also a big deal, particularly for female players: Volleyball.

And then there’s the always-fun Basketball.

One sport that was not represented here that is practiced during this week is golf. There is a boy, Camden, who gets an honorable mention for being the lone golfer.

A Day at Shetek: Bible Time

“A Day At Shetek” is an ongoing series of blog posts about various daily goings-on here at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Today we cover Bible Time and the theme of camp this year.

The Bible is central to Christian theology. That’s why we here at Shetek, being the good Lutherans we are, schedule a time to look at the word.

Each day with Bible Time has a certain theme, fitting into an overarching theme for the whole year. This year’s main theme is about the Body of Christ, discussed in 1 Corinthians.

This post won’t give the content of the year’s Bible Times, so that the year’s spoilers are kept secret for future campers. Instead, here are some pictures for you to enjoy, featuring the Sports Camp that is here the first half of this week.

A Day at Shetek, SOS Edition: Goodbyes Are Hard

This is a special edition of A Day at Shetek for SOS Week. All this week, we will publish a post a day. This post is one last goodbye to the campers.

It’s been a great week. The campers had fun, Agape were lots of help, and everyone had a good time. The saddest part of any week is when campers have to leave, and this one was no different.

Some campers were able to leave pretty easily, but most of them had a hard time letting go of the camp atmosphere. A few tears were even shed.

Without further ado, here are the last of the pictures from this week. You can find the rest, and more, over at the Shetek website – coming soon!

A Day at Shetek, SOS Edition: Dance & Week in Review

This is a special edition of A Day at Shetek for SOS Week. All this week, we will publish a post a day. This post talks about Thursday night’s dance, and wraps up with a “Week in Review” portion.

A dance happened yesterday (Thursday) night, and the campers had a great time. People danced to line dances such as “The Cupid Shuffle,” to more traditional dancing songs, such as the staff favorite, “Call Me Maybe,” and other songs yet were danced to, such as “The Ring of Fire.” It was a great time for everyone. Here are some pictures of some of the people having fun.

This week has been a great one, full of memories. Some people had trouble with their food, or complained about a couple small things, but overall, the campers, the Agape, and the staff are all happy with how the week went.

Be sure to look at the other posts from this week for our review. They are all put in the category called “SOS,” which you can find a link to at the bottom.

A Day at Shetek, SOS Edition: Canteen

This is a special edition of A Day at Shetek for SOS Week. All this week, we will publish a post a day. This post shows a sampling of what canteen time is like.

Canteen, for those who don’t know about it, is a time to buy candy, pop, and Shetek-labeled goods, from shirts to blankets to water bottles to stuffed animals.

There are normally two times for canteen, during a week: afternoon — when campers are allowed to buy things — and evening, when campers get a free snack.

This week, there are still two canteen times, but they are given to separate groups: SOS campers get the afternoon time (from about 2:45 to 4:00), and Agape get the evening time slot (9:30 to 10:00).

Here are just a few pictures to give you a sampling of what canteen is like.
